Spruce Skin and Wax Shoppe Commissions

Olympia, WA, 2018

This local skincare and waxing boutique commissioned two original paintings for the lobby and hallway leading to the treatment rooms. The owner wanted the art to reflect the branding colours of the business, and I worked with her to determine custom sized canvases to fit the exact spaces where she wanted to hang the paintings. I then hand stretched the canvases in my studio prior to painting.

The smaller painting was hung in the retail area, adjacent to the reception desk. It was hung above a small table offering water for guests to drink while they waited for their appointment. The table featured weekly floral arrangements from a local florist. The large painting was hung in the hallway leading back to the treatment rooms, and both paintings were visible when the door was opened.

With blue being the core colour for both paintings, I wanted to add some metallic gold since it was already present in the interior design of the retail area. In the small painting, the neutrals reference existing colours of the shoppe, and the wooded environment right outside. I also wanted each painting to have its own identity, yet use blue to link them together since clients would see them together once the door to the was open.

I was also hired to repaint the gold accents on the feature wall behind the reception desk, shown in the last image. The gold paint was faded, and my touch ups made it vibrant and opaque again.
