RUE Commission

Portland, OR, 2017

“Untitled(Pink)” 48”x36”x1” acrylic and graphite on canvas

This painting was commissioned by a local restaurant in SE Portland. Serving inventive farm to table dishes with a robust cocktail program, RUE was a neighborhood hotspot. Unfortunately, the restaurant is now closed.

RUE was located in a south facing corner unit with large windows, and received ample natural light in the daytime and early evening. The restaurant was only open for dinner service. Keeping the dramatic daytime light in mind while the staff was there prepping, in contrast to low light at night during service, was a key component to the development of the colour palette.

Pink was selected to bring in warmth and contrast the beautiful yet industrial concrete walls. The subtle hints of gold throughout the painting was gently reflected in the candlelight, and referenced the gold curtains on the feature windows. The main pattern within the painting was painted in a navy-almost-black paint, with a light graphite grid drawn in the background. The intention was to create a bold yet soft feature painting for the restaurant.

This painting “Untitled(Pink)” was selected for a juried art print publication called Studio Visit. Studio Visit is created by the publishers of New American Paintings, and highlights works by International artists.

Untitled(Pink) is featured in Volume 41 on page 173, 2018.
