Bio

Lucia Volker is an American artist and designer who explores abstraction using various techniques in painting, printmaking and site-specific mixed media installations. Inspired by formal elements of design, mark making and non-fine art types of painting, Lucia has developed a vast body of work shown in galleries across Canada and the United States, including Red Head Gallery in Toronto and ZINC Contemporary in Seattle. Select residencies include Assets for Artists at MASS MoCA, The Ou Gallery and Leña Artist Research and Residency Centre. In 2023 she collaborated with the City of Victoria for the downtown Art-in-Kisok public art initiative, and she has worked with numerous collectors to create custom commissioned paintings for their homes and businesses. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in Printmaking from the University of Utah, and a Diploma of Interior Design from Pacific Design Academy. She currently lives and works in Victoria, BC.

Past clients and collaborators include The City of Victoria, Victoria Arts Council, Spruce Skin and Wax Shoppe, EVO Hotel, and Escapa Records.

Artist Statement

My studio practice investigates the relationship between color, pattern, and spatial experience through painting, drawing, and site-specific installation. Working through abstraction, I explore how material, repetition, and composition can shape space and create a sense atmosphere within the image. I approach each work through a combination of intuition and observation, allowing materials and visual relationships to guide the process rather than working toward a predetermined image. Repetitive mark making becomes a method of inquiry, generating visual rhythms that move between tension and stillness.

My background in printmaking continues to shape my approach through layering, transparency, and an awareness of how meaning accumulates over time. I move fluidly between materials and processes, treating each medium as an extension of the same investigation rather than as separate disciplines. I am interested in how a painted surface can extend beyond the canvas and become an immersive spatial experience.

Recent work draws from the vivid colors and subtle patterns found in the forests of Vancouver Island. My curiosity lays in naturally occurring colors that seem almost artificial, such as the electric green of moss, and how these unexpected palettes challenge assumptions about the natural world. These observations become points of departure rather than representation, moving the work between landscape, abstraction, and formal investigations of colour and structure. Through layered surfaces and subtle shifts in color, I create work that reveals itself gradually, inviting sustained attention and a slower experience of looking.
